Welcome to the daily devotional!

This blog began with the goal of posting daily for a year. Now, only 50 days to go, and it has been a sweet and special time of fellowship with the Lord. Each day, I look for His presence in my life, to see what He wants me to write. Thanks to those of you who have shared this walk with me. I hope that as He strengthens my walk with Him that He accomplishes the same in your lives.

Monday, September 13: LIght of the world, You stepped down into darkness

Regardless of how dark it is in the middle of the night, when we wake from a deep slumber and walk the programmed path between bed and bathroom, we typically choose to remain in the dark. Though the light would awaken others in the house, more of our reasoning of not turning on the light has to do with the painful adjustment our eyes would need to make.

People walking in darkness are typically content in that darkness. If someone turns on the light, most will scream at them to turn it off. Yet once our eyes have adjusted to the light, life becomes much easier, alleviating the need to spend countless time and energy groping for items that couldn’t be found in the darkness. Additionally, light exposes evil.

Is it any wonder why those walking in sin are often unwilling to hear about Jesus Christ, the Light of the world? The light of Jesus exposes the darkness of sin. Similar to the physical realm, in the spiritual realm, our eyes must adjust. Yet once we see it through God’s eyes, as He enlightens us to understand sin from His perspective, we no longer desire to walk in darkness. Instead, He places the Light inside of us, in the person of the Holy Spirit, who enables us to love others with God’s love. He also empowers us to walk away from the sin that had enslaved us! That new walk is not instantaneous; it is an adjustment of our new vision. In His light, our beauty is revealed, as it is a reflection of God’s light.

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within. ~Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned.”
Matthew 4:16

Sadly, most people fear the light more than a child fears the dark! Have you ever stubbed your toe in the middle of the night? That wouldn’t have happened had you turned on the light! Jesus shines His Light, illuminating our walks and our lives. It doesn’t matter how widely you open your eyes, in the darkness, you can’t see. Turn on the light of Jesus in your life!

To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Luke 1:79
