Welcome to the daily devotional!

This blog began with the goal of posting daily for a year. Now, only 50 days to go, and it has been a sweet and special time of fellowship with the Lord. Each day, I look for His presence in my life, to see what He wants me to write. Thanks to those of you who have shared this walk with me. I hope that as He strengthens my walk with Him that He accomplishes the same in your lives.

Thursday, October 7: Knowledge of Him

From 1966 until 1974, The Newlywed Game appeared on ABC television, with emcee Bob Eubanks asking a variety of leading questions to four young couples, to see how well they knew each other. In any relationship, the time spent early on can be the sweetest, before little habits like forgetting to replace the toothpaste cap or leaving the toilet seat in the wrong position can begin to grate on nerves. When the honeymoon ends and the drudgery of everyday life begins to take effect, how badly does a couple desire to continue growing closer together?

As Christians, we are a part of the most important love relationship, with our Savior, Jesus. Do you know more about Him than you did a year ago? That is what it is all about. Even Christians who have walked with Jesus for decades should continue to grow in His ways and in His Word!

17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians 1:17-18

If you are a Christian, Jesus has revealed Himself to you. The Greek word for revelation is apocalypso, meaning “unveiling,” where we get our word apocalypse. The word “enlightened” in the verse above does not refer to the flip of a light switch, giving us all absolute knowledge of God. Instead, it is the removal of the veil covering our spiritual eyes, opening the door for us to see God. Instead of opening our intellect, He opens the eyes of our hearts. That is an introduction, but seeing God is not the same as knowing God. Knowledge of Him takes time, energy and effort.

but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Peter 3:18

God continues to reveal Himself to us through the world He breathed into existence and all of His creation, nature. Each believer is also a part of nature, and sometimes, God reveals Himself through His people, Christians. God has revealed Himself to man through His audible voice at times, and additionally, through angels, dreams and visions. Additionally, God can reveal Himself to us through our consciences, inner voices distinguishing between right and wrong. Surely, He also reveals Himself through miracles, and the size of those miracles can offer the believer insight into the depth of God’s contact into our lives. While those without spiritual vision chalk many events up to coincidence, believers in the omnipotent God realize that He works everything according to His intricately-woven plan. Nothing occurs accidentally!

Certainly, God revealed Himself to us by sending His Son to live on this earth. That was the culmination of His revelation, as it all points to Jesus! Without Him, we would have no access to relationship with God. Additionally, God has revealed Himself to us through the Holy Spirit, who lives inside every believer, pointing us to the Messiah. Finally, God has revealed Himself to us through His Word, telling us all that we need to know about Him.

Reading the Bible should be a passion for each believer, as it is God’s love letter to His creation. Each time we read the Bible, it deepens our understanding of who God is and what He accomplished on our behalves! Don’t get caught in the trap of deciding who God is before reading the Bible, for He wants to tell us about His actions and attributes! Look for Jesus on every page of the Bible, whether Old or New Testament. His name might not be apparent, but Jesus is there, even if concealed.

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
Hebrews 1:1-2

It is easy to get caught up in the trappings of this world. There is so much to keep us occupied, and time seems to slip by so quickly. Yet God placed each of us here for a purpose. The greatest priority is to find that personal relationship with Him who created us. Next on that list is the responsibility of teaching our own families about God, which includes His Laws, attributes and words. Additionally, our Christian love can affect everyone whom God places in our paths. As we spend more waking hours in our jobs than anywhere else, that could be your most important ministry. We are holy because He is holy, and that word means “set apart.” Do others sense that there is something different about you? Can they see the joy of your salvation, the peace that passes understanding and the hope of an eternity to spend with your Savior?

Don’t forget to emphasize drawing closer to God every single day! There is nothing more important! God is so big that He created all that we can see and all that we cannot see, yet He loves you us much, He wants to have a personal relationship! Draw me close to You! Never let me go!

18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
Hebrews 7:18-19
