Who saw Jesus on that first day? Well, I guess it depends who you are talking to. There are so many statements about that Resurrection morning that seem to contradict each other. One of the hardest to understand is why Mark, Peter’s secretary, doesn’t claim that Peter saw the Lord, but Luke claims that Peter saw Him early on that day. Wouldn’t Peter remember that? This is very confusing to me! It is like that game where you whisper a secret in the ear of the person seated next to you, they do the same to the next person. After 50 re-tellings of the story, the tale has changed drastically. Additionally, it is like thinking back to where you were when President Kennedy was shot. Do we always remember the details of a stressful situation? It doesn’t seem like all four of the gospel writers did.
Saturday:
• The next day, chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate, remembering that Jesus had claimed that after three days, He would rise. They asked Pilate to ensure that the tomb was secured until that time, so His disciples would not steal the body of Jesus and claim He had miraculously resurrected. (Matthew)
• Pilate told them to use their own guards and secure the tomb. (Matthew)
• They sealed the stone and posted a guard. (Matthew)
Sunday:
• At dawn on the day after the Sabbath, Mary Magdelene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) Mark adds that Salome and these other two women purchased spices to anoint Jesus. (Mark) Luke doesn’t identify the women, but says that it was the women who had been following Jesus. (Luke) John has Mary Magdalene coming alone to the tomb. (John)
• The three women wondered who they would get to roll back the stone for them, having arrived shortly after sunrise. (Mark)
• Mary Magdelene arrived before sunrise and saw that the stone had been removed. (John)
• Mary Magdelene ran and told John and Peter. (John)
• John outran Peter to the tomb. (John)
• John saw the linen cloths lying inside, but did not go in. (John)
• Peter went right in, then John followed. They believed. (John)
• Peter and John went home. (John)
• The stone was already removed. (Mark, Luke, John)
• Walking inside, the three ladies saw a young man sitting where Jesus’ body had been. (Mark)
• There was a great earthquake. (Matthew)
• An angel descended from heaven, rolled back the stone and sat on it. (Matthew)
• His countenance was like lightning, his face white as snow. (Matthew)
• The posted guards fell down as if they were dead. (Matthew)
• The angel spoke to the women, “Do not be afraid.” He then told them that Jesus was not there. “He is risen.” (Matthew, Mark, Luke)
• The women saw two men in shining garments. (Luke, John) John doesn’t mention other women, but Mary Magdelene.
• Mary Magdelene turned around in the tomb and Jesus was standing there, though she did not recognize Him. (John)
• Jesus called Mary by name, and she recognized Him. (John)
• Jesus told Mary not to touch Him, as He had not ascended to the Father yet. (John)
• The angels reminded the women that Jesus had said He would rise on the third day. (Luke)
• Then the two Mary’s went and looked where Jesus’ body used to be! (Matthew, Mark, Luke)
• Mary Magdelene, Joana, Mary the mother of James and other women then went and told the disciples what they had seen. (Luke)
• The angel told them that Jesus would go before them to the Galilee. (Matthew, Mark)
• The women told this to no one, as they were afraid. (Mark)
• The two Mary’s ran into Jesus. He said, “Rejoice!” (Matthew)
• Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdelene. (Mark, John)
• The two Mary’s touched His feet and worshipped Jesus. (Matthew)
• Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid,” then told them to instruct His brethren to meet Him in the Galilee. (Matthew)
• Mary Magdelene went and told His disciples as they wept and mourned for Jesus. (Mark, John)
• They did not believe Mary, that she had seen Jesus, nor did they believe that He was alive. (Mark) The disciples did not believe the women, though this did not say they had seen Him alive. (Luke)
• Peter ran to the tomb and found the linen cloth Jesus had been wrapped in. He walked away amazed! (Luke)
• Jesus appeared in another form to two men walking into the country. They also told the disciples, but the disciples did not believe them, either. (Mark)
• Jesus appeared to two men on the Emmaus road (could be the same men mentioned in Mark). They did not know it was Him. One of these men was Cleopas, the husband of one of the Mary’s at the tomb. (Luke)
• Jesus shared the Scriptures with these two men. When they realized who He was, He disappeared. (Luke)
• These men went to the disciples and those gathered with them and told them they had seen Jesus. They also reported that Peter had seen Him. (Luke)
• He appeared to the 11 (Judas was dead), while they were at a table, and rebuked them for not believing the other two reports, though John doesn’t mention the rebuke. (Mark, Luke, John)
• Thomas was not among the 11. (John)
• Jesus showed them His hands and feet. (Luke)
• Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on the disciples. (John)
• He was hungry and asked for food. They gave Him fish and honeycomb. He ate. (Luke)
• After the two Mary’s left, the guards awoke and went into the city to the chief priests to report what happened. (Matthew)
• The chief priests consulted with the elders and paid the soldiers a large sum of money to the soldiers, instructing them to say they had fallen asleep and the disciples had stolen Jesus’ body away. (Matthew)
• The disciples went into the Galilee to a mountain where Jesus had told them He would meet them. They saw Him and most worshipped Him, though some doubted. (Matthew)
• Jesus sent them out on the Great Commission, to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Matthew)
• Jesus sent them into the world to share the gospel. Those who believed and were baptized would be saved. (Mark)
• Jesus gave signs of those who follow Him: they would cast out demons, speak in tongues, handle poisonous snakes without harm, they will heal and be able to drink poison without harm. (Mark)
